How To Crochet A Square

By following this squae tutorial you will learn how to make a slip knot, chain foundation, single crochet, and change colors.

Supplies:

yarn, crochet hook, darning needle, scissors, measuring tape

I used a H sized hook and 4 worsted yarn, but you can use any size hook and yarn, just add or subtract chains to make it as close to the 5 inch x 5 inch goal as possible.

Okay, grab your hook and yarn and you are ready to begin! Have fun! And remember if you have any questions or comments or ideas to make this tutorial better, message me!

The 1st step is to make a slip knot on your hook with your yarn.

The next step is to chain the foundation row.

This is 1 slip knot + 1 chain

The next step is to make 14 single crochets across the foundation row into each chain. Start the single crochets in the chain space next to the space the hook is in.

How to single crochet:

Single crochet 13 more times across in every chain space.

Single crochet 14 times across in every stitch.

You now have 1 chain row and 2 rows of single crochets. Rows 4-14 are the same. Chain 1 turn your work over and single crochet 14 times across. ( you may not need 14 rows or you may need more depending on how thick your yarn and hook are.)  If you want your square solid, keep going and skip down to the border steps after you have completed your last row, but if you want to change color half way thru or add stripes, follow these next steps.

The color change starts during the last single crochet on the row. When you have 2 loops remaining on the hook, put down your working yarn and pick up the next color.

How to Change Color

Now put the working yarn in the back.

Turn and continue repeating the previous rows until you reach the desired length.

(chain 1 and 14 single crochets across)

The Border

If you want the same color border, skip the color change steps and just do the border, but if you want a different color border, when you get to the last single crochet of the last row, stop when you have 2 loops remaining on your hook. Lay down the working yarn and pick up the next color.

Now put the working yarn in the back.

Single crochet in each stitch across until you reach the next corner, than put a single crochet, chain 1, and a single crochet into the same space. Single crochet in each row across until you reach the next corner. Put sc, ch1, sc into the same stitch, and then single crochet in each stitch across until you reach the last corner. Put a single crochet into the corner and you are done with your square. Cut the yarn and thread thru the loop on the hook and pull snug. Then, thread thru needle and put the needle thru the ch1 which was your very first stitch in the border row.

Thread thru and knot and weave in thru the back. Voila!

R1 Make a slip knot and chain 14

R2 chain 1 and single crochet 14 times across.

R3-14 repeat R2 or until desired lenghth.

Border:

chain 1 and Single crochet into the same space. Single crochet across each row until you reach the corner. In the corner space put a single crochet, chain 1, and a single crochet. Single crochet across each stitch until you reach the next corner. Single crochet, chain 1 and single crochet into the corner. Single crochet across each row until you reach the corner. Single crochet, chain 1 and single crochet into the corner. Single crochet across in each stitch until you reach the last corner and put a single crochet into it. Cut the yarn. Thread the yarn thru the loop on hook and pull. Then thread through the chain 1 space, which was your first stitch of the border. Knot and weave in.

The End!
